When doing home decorating, you need to have only one plan -- "It's My Home and I'm Doing It My Way". Many feel they need to follow a specific style, period, pattern or designer to be "fashionably correct". This may be true if you are restoring a period home. However, when it is the place you call home, "Doing It My Way" is the motto to follow.
Your home should reflect the way you live and the way you feel most comfortable. Mother took several interior design classes and studied the various periods of furniture -- Queen or King whoever, country, modern and all the periods in between. When the classes were over, she came home from the final class and commented you need to design a home for the people in it and enjoy a specific or mix it up so that you are the most comfortable.
For the formal areas of your home, you may want to stay with a period or specific style as this is where your guests will be first introduced to your family. With the family room, relax and decorate your surroundings for fun and comfort as this is where your guests will be feeling apart of your family.
Find something that is "you" to design around. If it's the family you are centered around, start a wall of fame or a shelf of collectibles. If you are into sports, create a sports wall. If it's nature you find the most pleasure in, decorate a nature corner or room with furniture, mirrors or artsy items that reflexes your interest and brings a relaxing feeling to you and your family. Just add a bit of nature to your home.
"It's My Home and I'm Doing It My Way" can work for you. Give it a try. Your home is a statement of who you are and how you relax and enjoy your life. Have fun with your decorating!
