Indoor Wind Chimes

Nothing can beat the soothing hum of indoor wind chimes in helping relax frayed nerves after a stressful day. Imagine sitting or lying down on your favorite couch and listening to their calming sound. Feel the tension leave your body and be energized by the refreshing tones made by these chimes.

The ability of wind chimes to create relaxing sounds depends on their composition. Chimes that are shaped like a tube produce the most soothing and pleasing sounds. Others that are made up of solid pieces hanging from nylon threads or small chains generally create a less appealing sound.

What causes this difference? The pleasing sound created in some chimes is created in an "interior space," usually a tube-shaped chamber. Here, sound is multiplied by the vibrations inside the tube. These vibrations make the sound fuller and more soothing. The sound cannot be multiplied without this interior space. So while chimes made up of two hanging pieces of metal could produce sound, the effect isn't the same. This is why the typical tube-shaped wind chimes are the most popular types.

Some modern chime makers have produced finer and more technically advanced versions of indoor chimes. There are some with tubes playing specific types of notes, representing various types of music from different cultures. From Japanese Zen music to the Greek pentatonic scales, there is now a wider array of wind chimes to liven up your home. They can also be placed outdoors and can be used to decorate your lawn, garden, or pond. Designs range from unique fish chimes that give off a gentle sound when hit by the wind, to chimes that have crystals shaped like birds and unicorns.

To calm harried bodies and tired minds, take your pick from various indoor wind chimes. Your mind and body will surely be recharged and ready to face new challenges.

Bamboo Wind Chimes Can Provide A Soothing Natural Feel And Sound

Not only do they look pretty and are pleasant and soothing to listen too, but wind chimes also have a healing affect as well. By listening to the tones of the chimes you will soon find your mind becoming calm and the stress in your body being released. Not only does the soothing effect of the chimes help to open our spiritual awareness, but they have been used for centuries by many cultures.

In relation to Feng Shui wind chimes are thought they can help people to gain luck and prosper. Many people feel that bamboo wind chimes are the better ones for placing outside of the home. In fact you really can hang your bamboo wind chimes anywhere you want and any type of hook will do to help hang them from (even those sold for bird feeders are pretty useful). However it is important that you do not hang the bamboo wind chime close to any structure as you want the air to move around it freely, but make sure that it is in a position that is protected from strong gusts of wind as you don't want to get it damaged.

There are a number of ways in which a bamboo wind chime can be enjoyed for example why not think about hanging it near say a chair or hammock that you have in your garden, then take a soothing nap whilst you listen to the melodic tones of it.

Or else you could place your bamboo wind chime in a location on your patio/decking area close to where your outdoor seating/dining area is and listening to it whilst having a romantic meal with your loved one.

Then you may decide to place your bamboo wind chimes by your bedroom window so that you will hear the sound of the chimes on the breeze wafting through the window as you drift off to sleep.

You could even hang the bamboo wind chime by your front door so that the first thing you hear as you arrive home is their soft melodic tones being sent down the path to you on a gentle breeze.

If you really want to be different why not get hold of a small set of bamboo wind chimes and place them in your office, you may soon find that they help to release some of the stress you feel during your working day.

How To Make Wind Chimes

Wind chimes actually originate from the chimes used as musical instruments in Ancient China for religious affairs and ceremonies. Other neighboring Eastern Asian countries adopted them as a powerful Feng Shui element. The music they produce as the wind blows is said to be transformed into energy that can bring in health, wealth, and prosperity.

Everyone can make wind chimes. They can be made using materials aside from the commonly used bamboo, metal, shells or glass; you can also use coconut, plastic, natural stones, steel, or ceramics that can be shaped and positioned in various forms, styles, and designs. Other materials can also be combined and can be arranged as lanterns or mobiles.

Handy Tips in Making Wind Chimes

It is preferable to use hollow wood tubes or rods in making wood wind chimes. You can have them painted or varnished for added protection and style. Wind chimes made from wood can be easily exposed to the negative effects of sunlight and harsh weather, which can speed up their damage. However, choosing the right types of materials can maximize their full use.

There are various types of glass materials that you can use in making glass wind chimes, ranging from simple used bottles, crystal and glass beads to stained glass, vintage glasswares, and depression glass. The string that secures the pieces of glass together must be of good durable quality or else you may end up with brittle string connections that can destroy or shatter your glass wind chimes.

Wind chimes made from metal can produce deep rich sound tones, although the sound may also depend on the position of the components, the manner of stringing the materials together, or the thickness of the metals.

Be sure to prepare all the materials needed before you start with your wind chimes project. You can pattern the wind chimes after designs in newspapers or magazines, or you can experiment and have your own style simply by using your imagination and creativity.

Wind Chimes You Can Live With

Not all wind chimes are created equal and selecting the proper wind chime is important for the long term sanity of you, your family, and your guests.

A quality wind chime will have a precise musical pitch and the chime elements will harmonize with one another. This will create a soothing effect on the listener. A chime that is not properly tuned will create a dissonance that will be a long term irritation to those forced to listen to it. Tuning problems are common with many of the cheap imports from China. Many of these chimes are pretty to look at but the sound will likely drive you nuts in the long run.

Another factor one must consider is the volume that will be produced by the chime when the wind blows. Generally, the larger the chime is the louder the chime will be. Many people prefer the quiet tinkle of a smaller chime and may not be able to tolerate the loud sounds generated by a larger chime. If you prefer a low volume chime you may want to select a smaller chime.

There are many different types of wind chimes available on the market. Your selection will include chimes made from bamboo, aluminum, glass, pewter, steel, and other exotic materials such as sliced thunder eggs or obsidian. All of these materials can make a fine wind chime if the design and construction of the chime is done properly. Of the choices commonly available, chimes manufactured from aluminum or pewter are generally the best choice because these materials will not rust and keep their beauty for many years. Steel chimes tend to rust in a few years and bamboo chimes often will crack within a year when exposed to the elements. Glass chimes are fragile and will break relatively easily.

American manufacturers tend to produce the finest chimes you will find. The most popular American manufacturers are Woodstock Percussion, Whispering Winds, Music of the Spheres, Spirit Winds, QMT, Gracenotes, and J. W. Stannard.

Woodstock Percussion is the largest American manufacturer of wind chimes and offers a huge selection in many different styles and sizes. Most of their chimes are actually manufactured in China but under strict quality control guidelines from Woodstock. As a result, you can expect all Woodstock chimes to be top quality.

Whispering Winds specializes in pewter chimes with themed designs. These chimes will not rust and come is a multitude of themes and sizes. The chime tubes are made of aluminum and the artsy portion of the chime is manufactured from pewter. These chimes are rugged and will withstand sever weather. The only drawback to this design is that it requires a significant amount of wind to make the chime perform at its best.

Music of the Spheres specializes in thick walled aluminum chimes. These chime will resonate much longer than competing chimes of similar size and tend to be loud. Because these chimes are precisely tuned the loud volume is well tolerated by most people. In fact, many will purchase this chime specifically because it is loud. Music of the Spheres
manufactures some of the nicest sounding chimes you will find anywhere. These are truly beautiful chimes.

Spirit Winds is probably the most important manufacture of bamboo chimes in America. Actually, the chimes are manufactured in Asia but the quality is strictly controlled by Spirit Winds in America. Spirit Winds offers a large variety of sizes and designs. Some chimes are all bamboo and some are composed of aluminum chime rods with remaining parts being bamboo. Initial quality is good for these chimes but the dark finish on the bamboo tends to bleach out within a year when the chime is left out in the rain. There is also a tendency for the bamboo to crack over time. None the less, if your choice for a chime is bamboo then Spirit Winds is an excellent choice.

QMT manufactures several different lines of chimes such as Gentle Spirits, Bells of Vienna, Majesty Bells, Arias, and Weatherland. All of these lines have distinct design elements. That is to say, each design is different. Gentle Spirits are a thick walled aluminum chime with a beautiful finish of green, gold, or black. Majesty bells have a wooden windcatcher and top with aluminum tubes and look much like your classic wind chime. Weatherland and Arias chimes have a similar design using a wooden windcatcher and wood top. All chimes manufactured by QMT are top quality.

J. W. Stannard produces chimes in a variety of sizes and styles. All their designs tend to have the classic wind chime look with wooden windchatcher and top and aluminum chime tubes. All Stannard chimes are precision tuned and produce excellent tone.

The best chimes are tuned so that each chime tube will harmonize with the other chime tubes on the wind chime. If the tubes aren't tuned properly the joy of the chime will soon be lost. Popular tunings are derived from Pentatonic, Gregorian and other melodic musical scales. Some chimes play the notes of a popular song such as Amazing Grace or the music of Bach. The key to a good sounding chime is that all chime tubes must harmonize with all other chime tubes on the chime.

When purchasing your next wind chime keep in mind that your long term satisfaction will depend on the proper selection of chime size, tuning and chime material. Actually, it's not at all complicated, just audition the chime in your favorite store. If it sounds good to you then the chime will, no doubt, be your friend for many years to come.

Woodstock Chimes' Hudson River Chime

Woodstock Chimes' Hudson River Chime is precision-tuned to the scale used in Pete Seeger's 1961 song, "My Dirty Stream (The Hudson River Song)". This song uses a beautiful 5-note pentatonic scale, which is ideal for a windchime due to its strong harmonies when the notes are played together. The wood parts of this chime are made of bamboo, a sustainable resource that grows much faster than conventional hardwoods. The Hudson River Chime is part of the Woodstock Charitable Chimes™ Program, which was established to offer the wonderful sound of Woodstock Chimes with an equally wonderful bonus - a giveback feature. A portion of the sale of every Woodstock Charitable Chime is given to a deserving cause. In the case of the Hudson River Chime, sales will benefit The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater™, supporting its mission to protect the Hudson River and create the next generation of environmental leaders.

Wind Chimes For You

I am one of those people that believe wind chimes to be one of the essential things to have in the home. For some strange reason, having them hanging outside a window, balcony or poolside completes the surroundings. The tinkles or thuds produced by the chimes have a calming effect on the ambience and their aesthetic designs help brighten up the environment.

Feng Shui followers also believe that having a wind chime can change your luck for the better. Placing the chimes in an auspicious spot can activate the positive vibrations in that sector, thus activating what they call good vibrations in your life which, in turn, will boost more good energy in your direction. This domino effect is the equivalent of "one good turn deserves another" and is a cycle of good fortune. Whether this is true or not may differ from one person to another, of course. I, for one, am not one to tempt fate so I will hang my wind chime in my auspicious corner so my good chi will be activated and I will prosper as a result. If this proves untrue, at least my home will be aesthetically enhanced.

No matter what material the wind chimes are made of, each holds its own value - metal wind chimes are popular for their ability to produce light, happy sounds while wooden chimes are favored for their dull, calm thuds. Other materials like bamboo, shells, coins, glass or aluminum are also commonly used in wind chimes. Different sounds will be created by different elements and this will evoke different feelings so be sure to pick a sound that you will benefit from. If it is relaxation that you are aiming for, I suggest bamboo or wooden chimes - for me, they work best in helping me relax but there are some who like the tinkles of metal on metal. For stimulation, musical wind chimes work best - their specially tuned tubes will strike a pretty melody and help inspire you in your work.

If there is something that makes that little bit more special, it will be its significance to the person receiving. Wind chimes that not only match your décor but mean something to you as well are the ones that will be treasured. And you can add more meaning into wind chimes by having them engraved. Engraved wind chimes are gaining in popularity these days. Messages to be included on such chimes are imprinted onto the windplate - the slightly larger piece of element hanging below the wind chimes. On its own, the windplate does not play any role except that of an aesthetic kind. So if you wanted to make your wind chimes an extra special present for someone, I would suggest printing a message on the windplate.

A simple phrase like "Happy Birthday", "Merry Christmas" or "Welcome To Our Neighborhood" will make your wind chime stand out in exclusivity. Surround your message with appropriate designs and your chime will make the perfect, deeply personal gift for the occasion. I would recommend you hire a professional to do the job for you for a small cost to reduce the likelihood of having your chimes destroyed in the hands of an amateur.

Further personalize your wind chimes with DIY chimes. It is not as difficult as it looks and you get to determine the shape, type and design of the wind chimes. For starters, attempt building the tubular types and work with aluminum, which is the easiest material to manipulate. Your first chime should be always be the longest one and use that as a gauge for the rest. This way, if you ever cut the rest a little too much, they can still fit in with the rest. You can then create your own melodic chimes to play your personal tune.

Garden wind chimes are normally more decorative than the normal ones - in the outdoors, you can afford to be a little more adventurous in your décor style. Metal or wood, bamboo or shells, tubular or circular, the garden wind chimes' role is to provide rhythmic, free flow background music while you are tending to your plants, sitting al fresco drinking coffee or having a relaxing snooze outside. For wind chimes to be placed outdoors, you can even attempt twin chimes - which are literally what they sound like, two wind chimes in one. With more space to carry the sounds, twin chimes can truly be a beautiful sight and sound to behold. Just remember to choose chimes that are appropriate for your surroundings - twin chimes may be perfect for a big lawn but may look and sound overwhelming for small yards.

Grace note wind chimes are made of aluminum and are handcrafted to precision sound. They are of superior quality in both make and material and thus, are excellent, precious gifts for weddings, anniversaries or birthdays. You can differentiate grace note wind chimes from the rest by its tempered, soft finished tubing and specially tuned chimed melodies. Indeed, grace note wind chimes are often regarded as more than just chimes - they are musical instruments in their own right.

Although they are slightly more expensive than regular chimes, grace note wind chimes will bring with it the elegance and class that others may not, which, I think, may just be what you are looking for in your home.
