Music From The Wind

Wind chimes are also known as Aeolian chimes. They are hollow or solid metal, plastic or wooden tubes which are usually hung on the exterior of a building. When played by the wind, the chimes will either strike each other or any metal, wood or rubber balls which may be hung in the center. With each tube a different length, the chimes will give out a random musical mix of jangle, which can be bright or solemn in tone. In Feng Shui practice, wind chimes are used to balance the effects of the elements in the surroundings.

The sound produced by the wind chime really depends on the element the chimes are made of, their sizes and solidity. To some extent, how the wind chimes are hung will also affect its sound. Metal wind chimes tend to make tin-like sounds and those with large metal tubes will give out a deeper, more resonant pitch than the one with little tubes. Metal tubes which are more solid and thicker will also give out a different sound than hollow ones. Meanwhile, wooden wind chimes sound duller than metal ones but tend to sound more culturally musical. They are also more often ethnically decorated as well.

Large wind chimes are often used in larger homes and built-up areas for aesthetic purposes. Wind chimes of this sort are normally used to determine wind directions. If a person wanted to monitor wind coming from a certain direction, a large wind chime would be placed in that sector. Large wind chimes are more sensitive in picking up changes in wind currents than small ones and the slightest gust of wind will trigger off the wind chimes and give out the alert of wind changes.

One of the most popular and easily available wind chimes is metal wind chimes. These wind chimes normally consist of hollow tubes and the number of tubes range from six to thirty, or even more, depending on the overall size of the chimes and its use. Other metal chimes replace the tubes with circular metal plates set at different heights - each plate giving out a different pitch. Aside from tubes and plates, other metal items used for metal wind chimes are coins, bells and even animal shapes like dolphins, cats, starfish and fish. Metal wind chimes are popular in homes because of their light, tinkly pitch, which is believed to help lighten the mood of the listener.

Some wind chimes are so designed and created solely to make music. Precision tuned, the tubes that hang on the musical wind chimes are specifically keyed to produce a specific note. All the other tubes in that wind chime will correspond in the same key and when all sound together, they will all resonate in harmony. This produces a melody-like sound akin to an actual song when it is triggered by the breeze.

Musical wind chimes are a more sophisticated version of the conventional wind chimes as they have to be specially made and precision tuned for the purpose of producing music and not just sound. They are more expensive as well. These special wind chimes are not confined to metal elements alone - there are musical wind chimes made of bamboo, wood, glass, copper or aluminum, which are usually shaped into tubes that strike a central part which may be made of the same material. In making wind chimes, it is found that aluminum is the easiest element to work with, particularly when trying to find the right spot for the perfect note.

Size does matter in wind chimes. Small wind chimes are used mainly for background entertainment purposes and for décor. Because of its size, these wind chimes are mainly seen on residential balconies. The soft, light and crisp sound created by them is often used by inhabitants as a way of relaxing and injecting a sense of peace into the surroundings. Small wind chimes are also available in an array of different materials - wood, aluminum, copper, glass, metal, bamboo or even crystals. The only difference is the sound produced - it could be a light tinkle or dull thud.

Wind chimes can be tuned as well to produce sound specifically keyed to a certain pitch. The quickest way to tune wind chimes is to cut them to the desired length. When making the chimes, try and use aluminum or metal as they are easier to work with and cut the longest chime first. That way, even if it is wrongly cut, it can still be used as a reference for the rest of the chimes. If precision tuning is done, some precise measurements will have to be done when finding the exact spot to get the richest and most resonating sound on the tube. Tuned wind chimes when in sets of eight will produce a harmonious musical melody and if tuned really well, all will play in the same key.

Indoor Decor With a Hummingbird Touch

When doing home decorating, you need to have only one plan -- "It's My Home and I'm Doing It My Way". Many feel they need to follow a specific style, period, pattern or designer to be "fashionably correct". This may be true if you are restoring a period home. However, when it is the place you call home, "Doing It My Way" is the motto to follow.

Your home should reflect the way you live and the way you feel most comfortable. Mother took several interior design classes and studied the various periods of furniture -- Queen or King whoever, country, modern and all the periods in between. When the classes were over, she came home from the final class and commented you need to design a home for the people in it and enjoy a specific or mix it up so that you are the most comfortable.

For the formal areas of your home, you may want to stay with a period or specific style as this is where your guests will be first introduced to your family. With the family room, relax and decorate your surroundings for fun and comfort as this is where your guests will be feeling apart of your family.

Find something that is "you" to design around. If it's the family you are centered around, start a wall of fame or a shelf of collectibles. If you are into sports, create a sports wall. If it's nature you find the most pleasure in, decorate a nature corner or room with furniture, mirrors or artsy items that reflexes your interest and brings a relaxing feeling to you and your family. Just add a bit of nature to your home.

"It's My Home and I'm Doing It My Way" can work for you. Give it a try. Your home is a statement of who you are and how you relax and enjoy your life. Have fun with your decorating!

The Science Behind Wind Chimes

Wind chimes have come a long way since their banging, clanging days of old. Today's precision-tuned wind chimes produce a melody as inviting, sweet, and clear as the song sung by pristine waters cascading down a mountain side on a hot summer's day. That didn't happen by accident. More than an enhancement to home décor and garden yard décor, a quality wind chime is crafted using a scientific approach to achieve the best sound possible.

The lengths and placements of tubular pipes might look as though they were put together haphazardly. In reality, their placement is dependant upon where each pipe will vibrate most when struck by the clapper.

Areas of the pipe called "anti-nodes" resonate with a clearer, truer sound. These special points are found at each end of the pipe, as well as in the center. String placement is also important. Holes for the string are drilled where the pipe vibrates least. This is known as the "node of vibration."

That eye-catching wind chime hung from a tree limb to complete garden yard décor and landscape design is more than just lovely. It is a high precision instrument that joyously plays nature's song. It is conduit to feng shui philosophy, based on the invisible yet tangible presence of universal energy flowing throughout our environment.

Wind chimes sound best when tuned to the pentatonic scale, the same used as the black keys on a piano. This type scale is best for generating pleasing but random notes - like those generated by the wind. Type of material used is also important. Some materials provide a clearer sound than others. For decorative purposes, the pipes on some wind chimes are made to look like copper. Some clappers are made from metal, some from wood, or another material to produce variations of sound, different from one another.

Besides making harmonious sounds generated by the force of air current, the wood and metal used in the production of wind chimes further enhances their connection to the feng shui philosophy and the importance of elements.

A wind chime is among the most perfect gifts for Mother's Day. They also make meaningful anniversary gifts, and great personalized housewarming gifts. That is because they not only enhance home decorating and add interest to garden yard décor. They also are symbolic of harmony and peace...important elements of any relationship.

A quality set of tuned wind chimes can be found in lawn and garden stores, department stores, and some specialty shops. For your best selection and competitive pricing, however, purchase wind chimes on line.

Wind chimes...a unique and lovely way to set the tone for peace and harmony, while adding beauty and charm to your home or yard.

Wind Chimes Soothe The Soul

They can be pretty to look at and soothing to hear, but did you know that that wind chimes also have healing effects? Just listening to the tones of the chimes can help calm your mind and release stress. Calming your mind, the tones of the chimes help to release all that stored up stress. This soothing effect helps open our spiritual awareness and has been used by many cultures for centuries.

As a Feng Shui cure, your wind chimes could help you gain luck and prosper. Metal wind chimes are recommended for the North, West and Northwest, Wood for the East, South and Southeast. For good luck, it is recommended to use chimes with 4, 6, 7, 8 or 18 rods. If it's bad energy to want to keep away, then go for a chime with 5 rods. For outside the house, bamboo chimes are best.

You can hang wind chimes anywhere and on any type of hook - hooks sold for bird feeders work pretty good. Just make sure whatever hook you choose can support the weight of your chime. Make sure you do not hang it too close to any structure as you want it to be free to flow in the wind. Or you can use a fancy hanger to add more interest. When hanging your chime, remember to pick a spot that is protected from strong gusts of wind to avoid damage to your chime.

Some Ways To Enjoy Your Wind Chime:

Hang it near your hammock and take a soothing nap to the melodic tones of your chime.

Plant some flowers while listening to the music of your wind chime.

Bring dinner outside and have a romantic supper while listening to your chime.

Set your chimes up in your bedroom window so that you can hear them when the breeze wafts through on a hot summers evening.

Put some chimes in your office and to help release the stress of the workday.

Hang your wind chime by your door so that you can hear it first thing upon arriving home.

Feng Shui to Sell Your Home

Mr. & Mrs. C, Bristol had moved into their property over 12 months ago but because they did not intend staying and wanted to sell the house again, they had not bothered to unpack boxes these were left lying around. The energy in the home was stagnant and stale with no good chi energy flowing through the home. The hallway was cluttered, the dining room had books and boxes in it and the spare bedroom was piled high with items that were just waiting to be moved to another house. The garden was unkempt with old flowerpots, the grass was overgrown in the "lifes journey area" and covered the pathway this meant that the occupants of the home would feel that they were stuck and could not move on and this is what was happening. The hedgerows had grown over the windowsill at the front of the house so the occupants could not see out. At the front door there was a sign saying "Beware of the Dog" this was of course not very welcoming to prospective purchasers.

The first thing to be done was to clear the hallway and make this a nice entrance and mow the lawn, put some hanging baskets outside and cut the hedge so the windows were clean and clear as these are the "eyes" of a house and if you cannot see out of them, then symbolically you cannot see clearly. The next was to put into storage all the items that were still packed in boxes and make the bedrooms inviting to prospective purchasers, clear the dining room of clutter and boxes and store these away.

This then made the chi energy flow through the home and the ambience of the home became more open and once this was done Mr & Mrs C had a buyer within 3 months." Make sure that the For Sale board is to the right of the house the yang and energetic side of the house as you look at it from outside. Feng Shui and Intention to sell your home and acquire a new home In the North West of your home have a picture of the house you would like to move to and put a date on it say 3 months into the future and do the same with the details of the house you want to sell and write the date that you have sold the house and picture it in your mind as though it has already happened as though it is happening now. Make it happen!! Intention is everything in Feng Shui, make sure you have a clear intention that you want to sell the house. If one person does not want to move or you put out the thoughts that no-one will like your home or it will take a long time to sell then that's exactly what you will get. The universe will support you more readily if you imagine the perfect buyers walking up to the front door and they love the house and want to purchase it at the price you are asking.

A client called Mrs S. of Haywards Heath had their home on the market for over 18 months the house was lovely, she had cleared the clutter and all work surfaces were cleared and the home was bright and airy with neutral colours throughout the home. She had many viewers but the house did not sell. I got the impression that her daughter did not want to move from the house as she did not want to move to a smaller house. I told Mrs S to visualise the type of house she would like and to imagine herself living there with her daughter and put in every detail how many bedrooms, near the shops, no decorating needed to be done, lovely cottage garden and for the sale go through easily and it would be a property she could easily afford. Within 4 weeks of doing this Mrs S had an offer on her property and the person purchasing her property was the person who's property she had walked past a couple of weeks earlier and thought "I must go and have a look at that house" - inevitably they swapped homes and this made for an easy sale.

Believe it or not it can be as easy as this. Clearly focus on what you want in selling your house and where you want to move to and the kind of house you want, once the universe has received this message and a date for it to be done by - the house is SOLD.

Most people know the minute they step through the door that this is the house for them even when they have not seen the whole house because the property has got "kerb" appeal. The way to do this is:

1. Keep everything outside neat and tidy and in good repair

2. Mow the lawn regularly

3. Keep all dustbins tidied away in the garage or a place at the back of the house

4. Repaint faded or flaking paintwork

5. Put plant pots and hanging baskets outside with colourful plants

6. Keep trees and bushes trimmed so the house can be seen

7. Make sure the name of the house and numbers can be clearly seen

8. Clear the clutter outside of old boxes and plant pots

9. Have a door bell that works and chimes

10. Make sure the front door opens and closes without getting stuck symbolic of being "stuck in a rut"

11. Make sure there are no obstacles and a clear pathway to the front door

12. Make sure all windows are clear of overgrown bushes and trees as purchasers will see the house as dark and gloomy

13. Put a light on outside the front porch dusk until bedtime to energise the chi energy

14. Make sure bathroom and toilet doors are closed and toilet seats are down

15. Have a home cooking smell such as freshly baked cakes just brewed coffee

16. Open doors and windows to air the house and have fresh energy into the home

17. Have a galloping horse or a travelling buddha near the front door with the purpose that you will be moving home in the near future

Appeal to the Five Senses:

Sight: Have a clear pathway to the front door a curved path or driveway is best, soften walls and fences with flowers and shrubs. Have the paintwork a neutral colour and not flaking. Add some homely touches with a welcome mat. Clear all the tops in the kitchen and dressing tables making the rooms look larger and more spacious.

Sound: Have a nice chiming front door bell or windchimes. A water feature by the front door will make people feel relaxed as if by the sea. When entering the home have some soft music playing in the background so that its not deadly quiet and do not have the TV blaring out the latest football results!

Smell: Have lavender or roses near your front door as the prospective purchasers linger at the front door it will feel inviting. Put some sweet smelling fragrant flowers near the front door to bring that fresh smell of outdoors into your home. The smell of home cooking is very appealing and baking a cake just before the prospective purchasers arrive make it feel like home.

Taste: After the smell of baking leave some cakes out on the side for the purchasers to taste and help themselves making them feel welcome or leave some chocolates in a bowl always welcoming to young children.

Touch: The front door could have a stained glass window, there could be a Japanese garden with different textures with stones, wood, sand and plants.

Feng Shui Animal Symbolism

The role of both real and mythological animals is referred to frequently in feng shui theory and folklore. In many books, there is a description of an ideal house, which has a turtle behind it, a phoenix bird in front of it, and a dragon and tiger on either side. These four animals are symbolic of land and building formations. For example, to have a turtle behind the house for support or protection is a metaphor for a larger structure or a literal mountain. To have a bird in the front is symbolic for a much smaller land formation.

There is a concept that "chi" (air currents) move around a property and the higher land form in back (the turtle) protects the house, while a smaller land form in front (bird) helps the house receive the proper amount of chi. Like the edge of a bowl, the phoenix in front helps shore up or contain energy near the entrance of the house.

Then, the tiger and dragon on each side of the house represent neighboring houses, buildings, or real hills. These forms act as a way of protecting the house. In a general sense, a house that is not surrounded by other structures or land formations is a bit vulnerable and overly exposed to the elements. Some people take these references to the animals literally and they will place figurines of these creatures around their home for good luck and protection. At least one feng shui master I have studied with has alluded to the possibility that these animals also represent the shapes of certain important constellations.

Another popular feng shui creature is the fish. Fish symbolize long life in Chinese culture, so paintings and sculptures of them are seen as lucky. In the actual application of feng shui, fish in tanks and ponds are just an excuse to help circulate water. It is the water, which is the real remedy. But because feng shui comes from a very superstitious culture, the number of fish and the color of the fish in the aquarium have taken on exaggerated significance. As well, different types of birds are supposed to be omens for the occupants if the bird is seen flying by or creating a nest on the roof.

The image of a horse can't help but to symbolize travel and movement. One folk remedy is to place a Horse figurine facing the door for occupants who want to sell their home.

Lions and tigers are considered powerful, ferocious animals. Representations of them in pictures or sculptures should be done with caution, according to people who adhere to these animal cures. You may have seen stone lions flanking the entrance or stairs of a large building, but they would be considered inappropriate for a residence.

One of the Zodiac signs in Chinese astrology is a Tiger. Women who are the sign of the Tiger are considered fiercely independent and have a more difficult time settling down with a man. February is the month of the Tiger and according to auto insurance statistics, more car accidents occur in the month of February. This would be consistent with the Chinese interpretation that the fast-moving Tiger is also accident-prone.

It is interesting to note some of the cultural differences in how we relate to animals. For instance, in Chinese astrology a person born in the Year of the Rat can be a very intelligent person and a Snake person can easily be interested in metaphysics and spirituality. In the West, we think of the rat and snake as being sneaky and conniving. In some religions there is a belief that all human beings have lived at least one incarnation as every type of animal, and therefore we have an unconscious understanding of what these animals are capable of in their personalities and strengths.

Some birds are more monogamous than people, so there is a notion that putting up pictures of lovebirds in the bedroom will attract true love. These kinds of things can work as placebos, but are not considered the most sophisticated feng shui remedies.

Elephants have a reputation in both Chinese and Indian culture for attracting wealth. Images of trunk-up elephants often adorn the homes of people hoping the elephant will be a lucky image for them.

There are many more animals that have meaning in Chinese culture and/or specific to feng shui. Supposedly, a metal Rooster placed in the proper location can stop someone from committing an adulterous affair. Taken out of context, these animal symbols can seem strange, but they are really not much stranger than the meanings we attach to some inanimate objects in the Western world. Be it a country's flag, a car hood ornament, a designer label, or a religious sign, we place importance on many symbols that go unnoticed or unrecognized by other cultures.

Many people are surprised to find out that I do not prescribe any of these animal symbols as feng shui remedies. While I understand the psychological relief that they may provide, I do not feel that these symbols can change the energetic composition of a room. And with symbols ultimately being very personal, (like our dreams), I don't see how they would work for everyone in the same manner.

Wedding Bell Favors

Wedding Bell Favors will remind most people of a wedding no matter what setting it chimes in. Weddings stimulate our ears just as much as our taste buds, eyes and noses. Think of the wedding march, forks hitting plates, and the crisp ding of wine glasses tapping together. Most weddings do not have actual bells chiming from the roof, but that doesn't mean you can't add them into your wedding on a smaller scale.

Imagine your reception tables all draped in cloths corresponding to your wedding colors, the centerpieces scenting the room with a dainty fragrance, and the little place holders waiting for guests to arrive. Now hold that picture in your head and add in shiny chrome bells with unique designs for the top handles. They spark and gleam while your guests walk the room looking for their names, and then their faces light up as they take a seat and pick up their bells.

Wedding bell favors are an unexpected keepsake and they send out a tinkering of rings that will seal in your union happily.

If you plan on being the princess in your own personal fairy tale then silver castle bell favors are simply must haves. Poly resin castles of silver sit atop the shiny bells like they are perched on a hill; grand enough for royalty yet without the steep price tag when you purchase at a discount. They come in individual gift boxes with organza ribbons that will look amazing on any table set up. As your guests unwrap their treasures you will hear the singing of bells fitting for any princess on her big day.

The love within my heart bell wedding favor speaks for itself. What speaks from the soul at a marital union more than a silver heart filled with love? These chrome wedding bells come in at a comfortable 3.5 inch size to fit nicely in the hands of your thankful guests. Wrapped in an elegant box with organza bow, these bells will delight your guests of all ages and add a new element to the wedding: sonorous chimes!

If you are looking for bells to take a less central role in your table arrangement, then try the bell favor place card holders. These are even more special to your guests because they come in unique designs and can be used as place card holders, welcoming them to your reception...and to your life as a married couple.

You know everything changes after you walk down the aisle and the people who celebrate the occasion are the ones you will lean on, cry with, and cherish as a married couple. There is not a better way to thank them for their loyalty and love than special bells to ring happiness into their lives.

Whether you go with chrome wedding bell favors topped by a calla lily or rose or the beautiful silver plated kissing bells, your guests will not be expecting such a thoughtful, useful favor when they join you at the reception to ring in the rest of your life.

Wind Chimes - Origin and History of Windchimes

Windchimes are becoming more and more popular these days, not only in Asian countries but also in Western countries including here in the US. The main reason for this is the growing popularity of Feng Shui. We all know that the windchime produces melodious music which is relaxing for our mind. A study of the history of the windchime would show that the music was not the only reason why people hung windchimes in their homes centuries earlier.

Historians believe that people used the windchime for other reasons also. The most important one of course, was it was believed in Asian countries that the sound of chimes wards away bad spirits from our homes and invites good spirits. They are believed to bring us good health and good luck. Feng Shui which literally translates to wind-water, recommends using a windchime to balance the energies produced by the various forces. It attracts good energy and wards off bad energy.

But superstitions and beliefs aside, our ancestors used the windchime for another very practical reason, namely, weather forecasting. As we all know, in ancient times, there were no sophisticated equipments to predict wind patterns, storms etc. So, it is believed that people hung these windchimes in places where wind can pass through. By noticing a small change in the melody produced by these windchimes, they were able to predict which direction the wind was blowing from and the intensity with which it was blowing. Stronger winds and hence more chimes, indicated that a storm was brewing. This was particularly useful for fishermen and people living along coastal region as it warned them to not go to the sea and maybe saved their lives. Our ancestors were so intelligent as to use a simple chime producing instrument as a weather predicting tool!

As you can see, the wind chime has been used for various reasons. Nowadays stores even use windchimes to inform them when a customer enters! Whatever the reason, even if one is not superstitious, the windchime can always be hung in a home just as a decorative piece and for the melodious music that it produces.

Indoor Wind Chimes

Nothing can beat the soothing hum of indoor wind chimes in helping relax frayed nerves after a stressful day. Imagine sitting or lying down on your favorite couch and listening to their calming sound. Feel the tension leave your body and be energized by the refreshing tones made by these chimes.

The ability of wind chimes to create relaxing sounds depends on their composition. Chimes that are shaped like a tube produce the most soothing and pleasing sounds. Others that are made up of solid pieces hanging from nylon threads or small chains generally create a less appealing sound.

What causes this difference? The pleasing sound created in some chimes is created in an "interior space," usually a tube-shaped chamber. Here, sound is multiplied by the vibrations inside the tube. These vibrations make the sound fuller and more soothing. The sound cannot be multiplied without this interior space. So while chimes made up of two hanging pieces of metal could produce sound, the effect isn't the same. This is why the typical tube-shaped wind chimes are the most popular types.

Some modern chime makers have produced finer and more technically advanced versions of indoor chimes. There are some with tubes playing specific types of notes, representing various types of music from different cultures. From Japanese Zen music to the Greek pentatonic scales, there is now a wider array of wind chimes to liven up your home. They can also be placed outdoors and can be used to decorate your lawn, garden, or pond. Designs range from unique fish chimes that give off a gentle sound when hit by the wind, to chimes that have crystals shaped like birds and unicorns.

To calm harried bodies and tired minds, take your pick from various indoor wind chimes. Your mind and body will surely be recharged and ready to face new challenges.

Bamboo Wind Chimes Can Provide A Soothing Natural Feel And Sound

Not only do they look pretty and are pleasant and soothing to listen too, but wind chimes also have a healing affect as well. By listening to the tones of the chimes you will soon find your mind becoming calm and the stress in your body being released. Not only does the soothing effect of the chimes help to open our spiritual awareness, but they have been used for centuries by many cultures.

In relation to Feng Shui wind chimes are thought they can help people to gain luck and prosper. Many people feel that bamboo wind chimes are the better ones for placing outside of the home. In fact you really can hang your bamboo wind chimes anywhere you want and any type of hook will do to help hang them from (even those sold for bird feeders are pretty useful). However it is important that you do not hang the bamboo wind chime close to any structure as you want the air to move around it freely, but make sure that it is in a position that is protected from strong gusts of wind as you don't want to get it damaged.

There are a number of ways in which a bamboo wind chime can be enjoyed for example why not think about hanging it near say a chair or hammock that you have in your garden, then take a soothing nap whilst you listen to the melodic tones of it.

Or else you could place your bamboo wind chime in a location on your patio/decking area close to where your outdoor seating/dining area is and listening to it whilst having a romantic meal with your loved one.

Then you may decide to place your bamboo wind chimes by your bedroom window so that you will hear the sound of the chimes on the breeze wafting through the window as you drift off to sleep.

You could even hang the bamboo wind chime by your front door so that the first thing you hear as you arrive home is their soft melodic tones being sent down the path to you on a gentle breeze.

If you really want to be different why not get hold of a small set of bamboo wind chimes and place them in your office, you may soon find that they help to release some of the stress you feel during your working day.

How To Make Wind Chimes

Wind chimes actually originate from the chimes used as musical instruments in Ancient China for religious affairs and ceremonies. Other neighboring Eastern Asian countries adopted them as a powerful Feng Shui element. The music they produce as the wind blows is said to be transformed into energy that can bring in health, wealth, and prosperity.

Everyone can make wind chimes. They can be made using materials aside from the commonly used bamboo, metal, shells or glass; you can also use coconut, plastic, natural stones, steel, or ceramics that can be shaped and positioned in various forms, styles, and designs. Other materials can also be combined and can be arranged as lanterns or mobiles.

Handy Tips in Making Wind Chimes

It is preferable to use hollow wood tubes or rods in making wood wind chimes. You can have them painted or varnished for added protection and style. Wind chimes made from wood can be easily exposed to the negative effects of sunlight and harsh weather, which can speed up their damage. However, choosing the right types of materials can maximize their full use.

There are various types of glass materials that you can use in making glass wind chimes, ranging from simple used bottles, crystal and glass beads to stained glass, vintage glasswares, and depression glass. The string that secures the pieces of glass together must be of good durable quality or else you may end up with brittle string connections that can destroy or shatter your glass wind chimes.

Wind chimes made from metal can produce deep rich sound tones, although the sound may also depend on the position of the components, the manner of stringing the materials together, or the thickness of the metals.

Be sure to prepare all the materials needed before you start with your wind chimes project. You can pattern the wind chimes after designs in newspapers or magazines, or you can experiment and have your own style simply by using your imagination and creativity.

Wind Chimes You Can Live With

Not all wind chimes are created equal and selecting the proper wind chime is important for the long term sanity of you, your family, and your guests.

A quality wind chime will have a precise musical pitch and the chime elements will harmonize with one another. This will create a soothing effect on the listener. A chime that is not properly tuned will create a dissonance that will be a long term irritation to those forced to listen to it. Tuning problems are common with many of the cheap imports from China. Many of these chimes are pretty to look at but the sound will likely drive you nuts in the long run.

Another factor one must consider is the volume that will be produced by the chime when the wind blows. Generally, the larger the chime is the louder the chime will be. Many people prefer the quiet tinkle of a smaller chime and may not be able to tolerate the loud sounds generated by a larger chime. If you prefer a low volume chime you may want to select a smaller chime.

There are many different types of wind chimes available on the market. Your selection will include chimes made from bamboo, aluminum, glass, pewter, steel, and other exotic materials such as sliced thunder eggs or obsidian. All of these materials can make a fine wind chime if the design and construction of the chime is done properly. Of the choices commonly available, chimes manufactured from aluminum or pewter are generally the best choice because these materials will not rust and keep their beauty for many years. Steel chimes tend to rust in a few years and bamboo chimes often will crack within a year when exposed to the elements. Glass chimes are fragile and will break relatively easily.

American manufacturers tend to produce the finest chimes you will find. The most popular American manufacturers are Woodstock Percussion, Whispering Winds, Music of the Spheres, Spirit Winds, QMT, Gracenotes, and J. W. Stannard.

Woodstock Percussion is the largest American manufacturer of wind chimes and offers a huge selection in many different styles and sizes. Most of their chimes are actually manufactured in China but under strict quality control guidelines from Woodstock. As a result, you can expect all Woodstock chimes to be top quality.

Whispering Winds specializes in pewter chimes with themed designs. These chimes will not rust and come is a multitude of themes and sizes. The chime tubes are made of aluminum and the artsy portion of the chime is manufactured from pewter. These chimes are rugged and will withstand sever weather. The only drawback to this design is that it requires a significant amount of wind to make the chime perform at its best.

Music of the Spheres specializes in thick walled aluminum chimes. These chime will resonate much longer than competing chimes of similar size and tend to be loud. Because these chimes are precisely tuned the loud volume is well tolerated by most people. In fact, many will purchase this chime specifically because it is loud. Music of the Spheres
manufactures some of the nicest sounding chimes you will find anywhere. These are truly beautiful chimes.

Spirit Winds is probably the most important manufacture of bamboo chimes in America. Actually, the chimes are manufactured in Asia but the quality is strictly controlled by Spirit Winds in America. Spirit Winds offers a large variety of sizes and designs. Some chimes are all bamboo and some are composed of aluminum chime rods with remaining parts being bamboo. Initial quality is good for these chimes but the dark finish on the bamboo tends to bleach out within a year when the chime is left out in the rain. There is also a tendency for the bamboo to crack over time. None the less, if your choice for a chime is bamboo then Spirit Winds is an excellent choice.

QMT manufactures several different lines of chimes such as Gentle Spirits, Bells of Vienna, Majesty Bells, Arias, and Weatherland. All of these lines have distinct design elements. That is to say, each design is different. Gentle Spirits are a thick walled aluminum chime with a beautiful finish of green, gold, or black. Majesty bells have a wooden windcatcher and top with aluminum tubes and look much like your classic wind chime. Weatherland and Arias chimes have a similar design using a wooden windcatcher and wood top. All chimes manufactured by QMT are top quality.

J. W. Stannard produces chimes in a variety of sizes and styles. All their designs tend to have the classic wind chime look with wooden windchatcher and top and aluminum chime tubes. All Stannard chimes are precision tuned and produce excellent tone.

The best chimes are tuned so that each chime tube will harmonize with the other chime tubes on the wind chime. If the tubes aren't tuned properly the joy of the chime will soon be lost. Popular tunings are derived from Pentatonic, Gregorian and other melodic musical scales. Some chimes play the notes of a popular song such as Amazing Grace or the music of Bach. The key to a good sounding chime is that all chime tubes must harmonize with all other chime tubes on the chime.

When purchasing your next wind chime keep in mind that your long term satisfaction will depend on the proper selection of chime size, tuning and chime material. Actually, it's not at all complicated, just audition the chime in your favorite store. If it sounds good to you then the chime will, no doubt, be your friend for many years to come.

Woodstock Chimes' Hudson River Chime

Woodstock Chimes' Hudson River Chime is precision-tuned to the scale used in Pete Seeger's 1961 song, "My Dirty Stream (The Hudson River Song)". This song uses a beautiful 5-note pentatonic scale, which is ideal for a windchime due to its strong harmonies when the notes are played together. The wood parts of this chime are made of bamboo, a sustainable resource that grows much faster than conventional hardwoods. The Hudson River Chime is part of the Woodstock Charitable Chimes™ Program, which was established to offer the wonderful sound of Woodstock Chimes with an equally wonderful bonus - a giveback feature. A portion of the sale of every Woodstock Charitable Chime is given to a deserving cause. In the case of the Hudson River Chime, sales will benefit The Hudson River Sloop Clearwater™, supporting its mission to protect the Hudson River and create the next generation of environmental leaders.

Wind Chimes For You

I am one of those people that believe wind chimes to be one of the essential things to have in the home. For some strange reason, having them hanging outside a window, balcony or poolside completes the surroundings. The tinkles or thuds produced by the chimes have a calming effect on the ambience and their aesthetic designs help brighten up the environment.

Feng Shui followers also believe that having a wind chime can change your luck for the better. Placing the chimes in an auspicious spot can activate the positive vibrations in that sector, thus activating what they call good vibrations in your life which, in turn, will boost more good energy in your direction. This domino effect is the equivalent of "one good turn deserves another" and is a cycle of good fortune. Whether this is true or not may differ from one person to another, of course. I, for one, am not one to tempt fate so I will hang my wind chime in my auspicious corner so my good chi will be activated and I will prosper as a result. If this proves untrue, at least my home will be aesthetically enhanced.

No matter what material the wind chimes are made of, each holds its own value - metal wind chimes are popular for their ability to produce light, happy sounds while wooden chimes are favored for their dull, calm thuds. Other materials like bamboo, shells, coins, glass or aluminum are also commonly used in wind chimes. Different sounds will be created by different elements and this will evoke different feelings so be sure to pick a sound that you will benefit from. If it is relaxation that you are aiming for, I suggest bamboo or wooden chimes - for me, they work best in helping me relax but there are some who like the tinkles of metal on metal. For stimulation, musical wind chimes work best - their specially tuned tubes will strike a pretty melody and help inspire you in your work.

If there is something that makes that little bit more special, it will be its significance to the person receiving. Wind chimes that not only match your décor but mean something to you as well are the ones that will be treasured. And you can add more meaning into wind chimes by having them engraved. Engraved wind chimes are gaining in popularity these days. Messages to be included on such chimes are imprinted onto the windplate - the slightly larger piece of element hanging below the wind chimes. On its own, the windplate does not play any role except that of an aesthetic kind. So if you wanted to make your wind chimes an extra special present for someone, I would suggest printing a message on the windplate.

A simple phrase like "Happy Birthday", "Merry Christmas" or "Welcome To Our Neighborhood" will make your wind chime stand out in exclusivity. Surround your message with appropriate designs and your chime will make the perfect, deeply personal gift for the occasion. I would recommend you hire a professional to do the job for you for a small cost to reduce the likelihood of having your chimes destroyed in the hands of an amateur.

Further personalize your wind chimes with DIY chimes. It is not as difficult as it looks and you get to determine the shape, type and design of the wind chimes. For starters, attempt building the tubular types and work with aluminum, which is the easiest material to manipulate. Your first chime should be always be the longest one and use that as a gauge for the rest. This way, if you ever cut the rest a little too much, they can still fit in with the rest. You can then create your own melodic chimes to play your personal tune.

Garden wind chimes are normally more decorative than the normal ones - in the outdoors, you can afford to be a little more adventurous in your décor style. Metal or wood, bamboo or shells, tubular or circular, the garden wind chimes' role is to provide rhythmic, free flow background music while you are tending to your plants, sitting al fresco drinking coffee or having a relaxing snooze outside. For wind chimes to be placed outdoors, you can even attempt twin chimes - which are literally what they sound like, two wind chimes in one. With more space to carry the sounds, twin chimes can truly be a beautiful sight and sound to behold. Just remember to choose chimes that are appropriate for your surroundings - twin chimes may be perfect for a big lawn but may look and sound overwhelming for small yards.

Grace note wind chimes are made of aluminum and are handcrafted to precision sound. They are of superior quality in both make and material and thus, are excellent, precious gifts for weddings, anniversaries or birthdays. You can differentiate grace note wind chimes from the rest by its tempered, soft finished tubing and specially tuned chimed melodies. Indeed, grace note wind chimes are often regarded as more than just chimes - they are musical instruments in their own right.

Although they are slightly more expensive than regular chimes, grace note wind chimes will bring with it the elegance and class that others may not, which, I think, may just be what you are looking for in your home.
